Why is my AC blowing warm air, and how do you fix it?

Warm air almost always traces to one of six things: a thermostat set to ON instead of AUTO or not switched to COOL, a clogged filter choking airflow, a tripped breaker on the outdoor unit, a frozen evaporator coil, a dirty outdoor condenser, or low refrigerant from a leak. Three of those you can check yourself in five minutes. Start with the free checks below before you call anyone.
Check these three yourself first (about five minutes, no tools)
- Thermostat: set it to COOL, not just ON or FAN, and set the fan to AUTO. On ON, the fan blows room-temperature air between cooling cycles, which feels warm. Drop the target a few degrees and listen for the outdoor unit to start.
- Air filter: pull it. If light does not pass through it, replace it. A choked filter freezes the coil, and a frozen coil blows warm. This is the single most common cause and it costs a few dollars.
- Breakers: the outdoor unit is on its own breaker, often a separate disconnect box by the condenser. If it tripped, the indoor fan still runs and blows warm air. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call a pro; a repeat trip is an electrical fault, not a nuisance.
What needs a pro, and what it points to
- Outdoor unit not spinning while the system calls for cool: usually a failed run capacitor ($150 to $450) or contactor ($150 to $350). Ask to see the capacitor's measured reading against its printed rating.
- Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil: turn the system OFF and let it thaw for a few hours, then replace the filter. If it re-freezes, the cause is low airflow or low refrigerant, which is a pro visit.
- Cooling that fades over days and run times that stretch longer: low refrigerant from a leak. Refrigerant is not consumed, so a recharge without a leak search buys you the same warm-air visit next summer.
- A caked outdoor condenser coil: it cannot dump heat, so the house never cools. Gentle rinsing helps; bent fins and electrical work do not.
The one trap to avoid
If a tech says you are low on refrigerant and offers to top it off, ask where the leak is. Refrigerant does not get used up the way gas in a car does. Low refrigerant always means it leaked out somewhere, and a recharge without finding and fixing the leak is a temporary fix you will pay for again, usually within a season.

The system is powered and the fan is moving air, but the cooling side is not working: most often a frozen coil from a dirty filter, a tripped outdoor breaker, a dead capacitor, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filter and the outdoor breaker first, then call a pro if the outdoor unit is not spinning.
Can a dirty filter really make my AC blow warm?
Yes. A clogged filter starves the coil of airflow, the coil ices over, and once iced it blows warm. Replacing a few-dollar filter and letting the coil thaw fixes it more often than any paid repair. Check the filter before you spend anything.
Should I add refrigerant myself?
No. Refrigerant handling requires EPA certification, the right gauges, and a leak search, and low refrigerant means a leak that a recharge does not fix. A DIY top-off masks the real problem and can damage the compressor.
